State Decides on Bored Tunnel Under Downtown Area

In early January 2009 leaders of the State of Washington, along with leaders of Seattle and King County, decided that a deep bored tunnel under Downtown Seattle would be the best solution for replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Click here for more about the bored tunnel and my opinions.

My Opinions

Now that there is a consensus among state, city, and county leaders that a bored tunnel is the best option, I feel that it is time to stop the endless discussions and arguments and go ahead with the bored tunnel.

However, in order to deal with the loss of easy connections from the viaduct to the northwest part of Seattle, I believe that there should be added to the project a major upgrading of Mercer Street. The upgrade would include a cut-and-cover tunnel below the surface of Mercer Street extending from the Interstate 5 off/on ramps to Elliott Avenue West, along with a major interchange at Aurora Avenue North to provide access from both I-5 and Elliott Ave. W. to the new tunnel.
